June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the impact it has on millions of lives. While PTSD is often associated with veterans, it can affect anyone who has experienced trauma—survivors of abuse, first responders, victims of accidents, or anyone who has faced deeply distressing events.
At NAMI Southwest Washington, we stand with all those impacted by PTSD. This month, we invite you to join us in understanding, supporting, and fostering hope for recovery.
What is PTSD?
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It may manifest as flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, avoidance behaviors, or persistent negative thoughts. PTSD is not a sign of weakness—it’s a response to overwhelming situations that disrupt our sense of safety and control.
While many people are familiar with PTSD, it’s important to also acknowledge Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). C-PTSD can occur when someone experiences chronic or repeated trauma over a long period—such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, or long-term captivity—without a clear path to safety or escape. C-PTSD shares many of the same symptoms as PTSD but can also include deep emotional dysregulation, difficulty with relationships, persistent feelings of worthlessness, and a profound sense of being trapped or damaged.
Understanding C-PTSD helps us recognize that trauma doesn’t always come from a single event. For many, it’s the accumulation of distress over time, and healing often requires compassion, long-term support, and specialized care.
Breaking the Stigma
Unfortunately, stigma and misunderstanding often surround PTSD and C-PTSD. Many people suffer in silence, fearing judgment or rejection. This stigma can prevent individuals from seeking help, even though effective treatments are available. Raising awareness is key to breaking down these barriers and creating safe spaces for healing.
At NAMI Southwest Washington, we encourage everyone to learn about PTSD and C-PTSD, and to recognize the courage it takes to seek support. Let’s listen without judgment, speak with compassion, and uplift those navigating their recovery journey.
How You Can Help
This June, here’s how we can all take part in PTSD Awareness Month:
✅ Educate Yourself and Others: Learn the signs and symptoms of PTSD and C-PTSD. Share information and resources with your friends, family, and community.
✅ Listen and Support: If someone you know is struggling, offer a listening ear. Let them know they are not alone and that help is available.
✅ Connect with Resources: NAMI Southwest Washington offers support groups, educational programs, and resources for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.
✅ Raise Awareness: Use your voice on social media or in your community to break the silence around PTSD and C-PTSD. Sharing your story (if you feel comfortable) can inspire others to seek help.
There is Hope
Whether the trauma comes from a single event or from long-term repeated experiences, PTSD and C-PTSD can feel overwhelming. But recovery is possible. With support, understanding, and appropriate treatment, individuals can reclaim their lives, rebuild connections, and rediscover joy and meaning.
This month, and every month, NAMI Southwest Washington is here to offer guidance, support, and community.
