July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the unique mental health challenges faced by racially and ethnically diverse communities. This year’s theme, “Turn Awareness into Action,” calls us to move beyond acknowledgment and take real, tangible steps toward building a more inclusive and equitable mental health landscape.
Mental health affects every community, but systemic barriers such as discrimination, cultural stigma, lack of access to care, and language differences can make it especially difficult for individuals from minority backgrounds to receive the support they need. According to the American Psychiatric Association, only about one-third of Black adults who need mental health care receive it. Similar disparities exist for Latinx, Asian, Native American, and other communities of color.
At NAMI Southwest Washington, we recognize that awareness is only the first step. Turning awareness into action means:
-
Advocating for culturally competent care. Mental health providers should understand and respect cultural differences to ensure everyone feels seen, heard, and safe in treatment.
-
Expanding access to resources. Breaking down financial, geographical, and linguistic barriers that keep people from receiving mental health support.
-
Building community partnerships. Collaborating with organizations led by and serving minority communities to co-create solutions that meet people where they are.
-
Normalizing mental health conversations. Encouraging open, judgment-free dialogue within families and communities to reduce stigma and encourage early intervention.
This month, we encourage everyone to ask: What actions can I take to support mental health equity? Whether it’s educating yourself on cultural nuances in mental health, advocating for policy changes, supporting local organizations, or simply checking in on a friend, every action matters.
If you or someone you love needs support, NAMI Southwest Washington is here. We offer free programs and support groups designed to uplift, educate, and empower. We are committed to creating a community where mental health care is accessible and equitable for all.
Let’s work together to turn awareness into action — this month and beyond.
