By NAMI Southwest Washington
The theme for NAMI National’s Mental Illness Awareness Week this year which encompasses the essence of giving and receiving support in community as a unified voice sharing a healing mission. The journey to recovery looks different for everyone, and it can undoubtedly feel different in each unique situation, which may result in loneliness and isolation. The concept of togetherness in community is not only about power in numbers but also the experiences individuals bring to the table. And, importantly, the reminder that you are not alone; there is a safe space of understanding and of hope.
NAMI Southwest Washington’s mission is to provide education, advocacy, awareness, and support to anyone affected by mental illness. One of the ways we provide support is through our online and in-person support groups.
Understandably, entering a support group with feelings of vulnerability can seem like a big step. And it is! But there are many benefits to discussing what’s going on in a group setting. Talking openly and honestly among others with similar lived experiences can help reduce stress and loneliness, increase motivation and self-understanding, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conversations. Groups are judgment-free and free of cost, giving everyone equal opportunity and access to share their stories, resources, and, of course, support.
NAMI support groups are for individuals ages 18 and over, but it is not lost on us that our younger population is also facing mental health challenges. Teens and young adults can now text FRIEND to 62640 or call the NAMI Teen and Young Adult Helpline at 1-800-950-NAMI to connect to a free nationwide peer-support service that provides resources and support. Specialists are young adults with lived experience trained to help other teens navigate tough times.
It can be challenging to reach out for help in any way. NAMI understands because the staff and volunteers have all been there. As a community, we never want anyone to feel alone in their struggles. Together We Care. Together We Share. This week and every week.
